Explaining the Green Deal Cashback Scheme and How it Works

If you apply for Cashback Payments now, you may be eligible for the Green Deal Cashback Scheme, but what is it? Well, this scheme is intended to reward people who take prompt action to upgrade their homes by making them more energy efficient. If you are interested, you can only claim Cashback Payments through the Green Deal. If you are eligible, the Government will issue you with direct cash payments.

The Government is guarantying Cashback Payments at the current rates until the first £40m has been spent. Nevertheless, these rates will decline as the Green Deal Cashback Scheme progresses. This is so that as many people as possible can benefit from this scheme. It’s also worth remembering that Cashback Payment rates are guaranteed at the same rate offered to you when you first applied.

So, who is eligible for Cashback payments?

Applicants will need to meet certain criteria for eligibility. The Cashback Scheme is open to domestic properties in England and Wales. This includes rented domestic properties.

It is intended to operate alongside the Green Deal Scheme. So, you will only be eligible if you have had a Green Deal Assessment, an Energy Performance Certificate and an Occupancy Assessment. Applicants must have also accepted a quote from a certified Green Deal Provider.

So, you will need to use the Green Deal Supply Chain if you want to claim Cashback Payments. This means:

•    Entering into a Green Deal Plan or Energy Plan with a Green Deal Provider
•    The installation must be carried out by a certified Green Deal Installer

What can I claim Cashback Payments for?

When you have a Green Deal Assessment, you will receive an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). The EPC will outline recommendations for energy efficiency upgrades to your property. You can only apply for the Green Deal Cashback Scheme in regards to these recommended measures.

It’s also important to remember that if your EPC recommends upgrades such as loft insulation or cavity wall insulation, you will need to install these in order to claim Cashback on any other energy efficiency measures.

Renewable energy technologies are not covered by the Cashback Scheme. They are already supported by the Renewable Heat Premium Payments, Renewable Heat Incentive or the Feed-in-tariffs. Nevertheless, you may be able to claim Cashback Payments for installing condensing boilers, A-rated windows and similar items.  If you want to apply for the Cashback Payments, you can apply online, or Registered Green Deal Providers can also claim on your behalf.
